When You’re Running on Empty

Exhausted

When You’re Running on Empty

For the days when you’re tired in ways that one good night of sleep doesn’t seem to fix.

Hey, you made it.

I know you're tired, so I'm glad you took a minute for yourself.

Get comfortable. You don't have to talk or do a thing in this moment. Let's just spend a little time in God's presence.

01 · Word Flow Breathing Prayer

Let’s Breathe Together

Three gentle cycles. Breathe naturally, and skip the four-second hold if holding your breath feels uncomfortable.

Breath 1 Inhale “Lord, I’m here with You.”

Hold 4 seconds — optional

Exhale “I bring You my exhaustion.”
Breath 2 Inhale “I receive Your peace.”

Hold 4 seconds — optional

Exhale “I release the pressure to figure it all out.”
Breath 3 Inhale “Your strength is here for me.”

Hold 4 seconds — optional

Exhale “I surrender what I cannot carry.”
02 · God’s Word

Let’s Start With God’s Word

Matthew 11:28–30

Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to Him and find rest.

1 Kings 19:5–8

God meets an exhausted Elijah with food, water, and sleep before the journey continues.

03 · A Little Encouragement

When Was the Last Time You Actually Felt Rested?

For these next few minutes, don't use the quiet to overthink your next move or mentally go over everything that still needs to be done. If you're able to set it aside, do that for just a moment.

Pause. Breathe. Return to His peace. Even if all you have is one minute, you can bring Him the exhaustion and the pressure. Exchange the need to hold everything together for His peace. Surrender what you can't carry alone. Right now, you don't have to make a plan to deserve His presence.

Can I ask you something? When was the last time you actually felt rested? Not just getting a few hours of sleep, but waking up without already feeling like you had nothing left.

Maybe you're caring for somebody who depends on you. Maybe you're working all day and still struggling to make ends meet. Or you've been living through a difficult season while keeping up with everyone else's needs. When a moment finally opens, you're too tired to enjoy it.

Look at Elijah in 1 Kings 19. Following intense fear and strain, he reaches a point where he cannot keep going as he has been. God's care includes food, water, and sleep. I love that Scripture doesn't ignore his physical needs.

Sometimes you need more than another reminder to be strong. You need a meal, real sleep, shared responsibilities, a healthcare conversation, or practical support. Spiritual rest and physical care aren't rivals.

I know not everybody can take the afternoon off. There may be children to feed, a shift you can't miss, or someone waiting for medication or care. So I'm not going to tell you rest is as simple as canceling everything. But your needs matter, too.

Jesus invites the weary to come to Him, not to finish every task and come back when they feel stronger. You can come tired. You can sit quietly and receive His peace before you think about everything you have to do next.

04 · RENEWED Reflection

What Has Exhaustion Been Costing You?

How long have you been telling yourself you'll rest once everything settles down? Once the children are older, the bills are caught up, somebody gets better, or this season passes? What if there's always another responsibility waiting?

Sometimes being strong for everybody else has become so familiar that we barely notice the cost. Maybe you get irritated easily or no longer enjoy things you used to love. Maybe even time with God has started feeling like one more item on the list.

Spending time with Him isn't a task you complete to earn His love. Even a single quiet moment can be a place to return. Receive before you try to reorganize everything.

When you're ready, ask what needs to change. Have you been saying yes when you don't have capacity? Is there support you could receive? Are you so exhausted that you need to seek medical guidance? None of that makes your need for spiritual rest any less real.

Hear

What does Jesus' invitation remind me about coming to Him when I'm weary?

Hold

What have I carried so long that I've stopped noticing how much it's costing me?

Do

What is one practical way I can receive care today, without turning this into another long assignment?

05 · Guided Pause • Breathe • Return

Come Back to This Moment

Pause: Don’t use this moment to work out tomorrow. Notice your exhaustion without judging it. “Lord, I’m tired, and You know how much I’ve carried.”

Breathe and exchange: Take a gentle breath. Receive God’s peace. Release the pressure to keep thinking, planning, and holding everything together. “Father, help me receive Your care.”

Return: Remain with Him another moment if that’s all you have. When you’re ready, ask what one need or responsibility deserves your attention next. You can return again later.

06 · Before You Go, Let’s Pray

A Prayer for This Moment

Father, You know just how tired I am. You know how long I've been carrying these responsibilities and how many times I've told myself to keep going a little longer.

Thank You that I don't have to pretend to be strong every moment. Right now, I don't want to use another quiet minute to worry about everything still waiting for me. Help me pause, breathe, and receive Your peace.

I surrender what I can't carry alone and receive the care You have for me today. Give me wisdom about my responsibilities and courage to make needed changes. Where my circumstances cannot change right now, show me what support and physical rest are available.

Teach me to rest without guilt. And when I'm too tired to find the words, thank You that I can simply be with You. Renew my strength for today and help me return again tomorrow. In Jesus' name, amen.
